After 4 months on the drawing of Mt Rainier, I had a breakthrough of 3 portraits in Nov 2010. This was a self-portrait I did for the late anthropologist and professor John Ross. He was dying, I was home bound, and we knew we had very little time left together. I loved the man.
He asked me for this. He said that late at night he felt he could speak to it and I understand him. I miss his brilliant intellect, his deep multi-cultural and personal insights, his generous and wonderfully creative spirit, and his grace as my dear friend for over 50 years.
I signed this one and the others from that time as 'Half B' because I had only the 1st cataract surgery and was waiting for the other eye. And they were radically different.
